Summer 1973

Thought I'd share a little about the Summer of 1973 with everyone: I was staying with MaMa Ellen when the kids talked me into going to Fannie and James to stay alnight. At that time they lived up Tutor Key. When we got up the next morning the place was flooded... and we were right out in it playing when Fannie found us. She finally told us the snapping turtles would get us if we didn't get out of that water... that changed our minds about wanting to stay and play longer. LOL We had to walk out through the water, Fannie was pregnant with Robert. The water was so deep I had Barb on my shoulders and Mike carried Tammy. We went up a little hill where there was a store. I had some money and the boys talked me into secretly buying a brick of fireworks to take with us, and we went to MaMa's to stay. Later on when PaPa was asleep in his chair Jimmy wound the fuses on a pack of firecrackers together so we could light them all at once and told me to throw them under PaPa's chair. So I did. Scared PaPa to death... he swung his cane so hard it left an imprint in the wood door facing. Jimmy and Mike jerked me back just in time or it would have busted my skull. Unbeknownest to me there was a certain slat in the floor that they knew not to cross. As long as you didn't cross it PaPa couldn't reach you with that cane, and I had been over the line. Thanks to the boys I was ok, but it's a thousand wonders that PaPa didn't have a heart attack. But as a kid you don't think about things like that. Later on that same visit I was following Mike everywhere he went... steping in his footprints, and getting on his nerves. He'd say Stop following me and leave me alone... I don't play with girls... go play with Jimmy... so I would. Jimmy and I would sneak off to the creek.. watching out for the coal trucks ... as we'd cross the road. We would be having a ball when wouldn't you know it... we'd get caught. Mike and Rosie didn't want to play with us... or go to the creek with us .... but they'd set on the porch and cry saying that we wouldn't play with them and rat us out for being in the creek every time. LOL
